The Plastic Vortex on Google Maps

Kaisei Project

The Plastic Vortex, also described as The Great Pacific Garbage Patch or the Eastern Garbage Patch, is a gyre of litter in the central North Pacific Ocean, estimated to be twice the size of Texas. Plastic and other debris is trapped here by the currents of the North Pacific Gyre.

Project Kaisei is a team of innovators, scientists, environmentalists, ocean lovers, sailors, and sports enthusiasts who have come together to study the North Pacific Gyre and the marine debris that has collected in this oceanic region. The aim of the project is to determine how to capture the debris and to study the possible retrieval and processing techniques that could be potentially employed to detoxify and recycle these materials into diesel fuel.

The first research expedition of the project is using the Google Earth plugin to document and communicate the expedition's progress. The expedition will consist of a large pass through the Plastic Vortex and you can follow the track of the expedition's passage via this Google Earth plugin application, that was developed with the help of Google Earth Outreach.

Videos of the expedition can be viewed directly from the plugin and users can even leave their own video or audio comments by registering with the site.
